New iPod

I finally got around to selling Erin my 30 gig ipod video, in favor of a new 80 gig model, and i have to say, i love the new one. Quicker, smoother graphics, brighter display, more than double the old battery time (30 hours continuous playback), not to mention a shitload more memory. the album cover scrollthru is fun, but it took me a good two hours to go thru my (somewhat crippled) music collection and find all the album art so im not constantly looking at a 'file not found' icon. Altho what id really like to talk about is the box it came in.

The ipod box is made of good, solid cardboard, very resilliant to dents and dings and squishing much like other packaging ive dealt with, and it opens by the inside fitting neatly into the upper outside graphic portion of the container. being a strange person, i wondered at this for a minute, until i realized what it really reminded me of.

A shoebox.

is there something in that? is apple trying to subconciously associate the ipod with something vital, day to day that we inevitably need when going out the door? how often do you go anywhere without shoes? Mp3 players come in enough shapes sizes and colors to be considered a fashion accessory, much like shoes, and finding one that fits you might as well come with a handy chart and one of those little metal things that measure the width of your foot. apple is clearly saying that ipod is the best, the prettiest, and the most versetile, much like converse is doing these days with the billion trillion chuck taylor designs they have out.

and, you occasionally have to get a bigger size.
